Winter soups, stews and simple chicken fill our bellies this week and all of the prep and shopping is made easy thanks to our friends at New World.
We celebrate winter in style this week with a wonderful barley stew. Barley is such a versatile grain and Kathy Paterson teams it with carrot for a hearty dinner, plus chicken skewers with sesame rice to start the week off right.

New Zealander’s LOVE chicken! And while breast is usually the favourite, chicken thigh is a great choice for cooking as it adds more flavour to your dish. Because of the type of muscle they are, chicken thighs are a darker fattier meat which makes them a tender, tastier choice.
Pearl barley is high in fibre and a wholesome choice for bulking out soups and stews as it absorbs all those beautiful flavours. Similarly it’s a great alternative to rice – try it as a risotto! Look for Pams Pearl Barley at New World in the grocery aisles, often near soup mixes.
